Buying a box spring bed: what matters

A box spring bed consists of a sprung base, a mattress and, depending on the system, a topper. The name alone says nothing about materials, spring layers or replaceability. Compare each layer separately and ask for the complete construction of the exact model.

Base, mattress and topper

The bottom layer is the base. Check which spring system, frame and upholstery layers it contains. A cross-section or written specification is more useful than the height of the base. Also ask whether the base, mattress and topper can later be replaced separately.

The mattress needs to suit your build, sleeping position and personal perception. Tension labels are not standardised between manufacturers. Check the spring construction and fillings as well as the stated tension. The feel is best assessed in your normal sleeping position.

The topper changes the immediate surface feel and may protect the mattress. It is part of the complete system and should be tested together with the base and mattress. Ask about its material, care and replaceability instead of using the topper alone to judge the quality of the bed.

Dimensions, height and functions

Mattress sizes offered in Switzerland include 80, 90, 140, 160 and 180 by 200 centimetres. Other dimensions and made-to-order options depend on the manufacturer. For two sleepers, a split configuration may allow different tensions. Before ordering, check that existing bed linen and duvets fit the selected size.

Total height comes from the base, mattress, topper and feet and varies by model. Sit on the edge while trying the bed and check whether getting in and standing up feels comfortable for you. Ask for the finished height of the ordered configuration in writing.

The headboard and covering affect both appearance and everyday use. Ask whether and how the covering can be cleaned. If you read in bed, test the headboard while sitting and check its height, padding and position. Pictures alone do not show those differences.

A motorised frame is a functional choice, not a quality mark. Try the adjustment while sitting and lying down, listen to the motor and ask how the cables, control and emergency lowering work. If you will not use the function, you are paying for technology rather than the construction of the bed. Any medical concern should be assessed professionally in its own right.

Check the construction, not the terminology

Do not look at spring count alone. Wire gauge, arrangement, the number of spring layers and the materials above them matter too. A high count in one layer of small springs cannot be compared meaningfully with a different construction. Ask to see a cross-section and have the purpose of every layer explained.

With natural fillings, composition and workmanship matter. Wool, cotton, horsehair and other fibres behave differently, and no single material makes a good bed on its own. What matters is that the filling, spring system and cover work together and that the specification of the actual model is documented.

Check the edge as well. Sit where you will get up in the morning and notice how stable the border feels. Then lie in your usual position. A trained adviser can add an observation of your visible body position, but this is not a medical assessment.

Before ordering, clarify five practical points. How long is the lead time? Is it assembled on site? Will the bed fit through the stairwell and the doors? Is the old mattress taken away? And what exactly does the guarantee cover, and for how long? Ask before signing, not on delivery day.

Before ordering and delivery

Plan the delivery before ordering. Measure the bedroom, front door, lift, landings and the tightest turn on the way. Ask whether the headboard and base travel in sections, who assembles them and what happens to the packaging and old bed. A suitable mattress is of little use if the headboard cannot reach the room.

Clarify before signing

  • How long is the lead time?
  • Is it assembled on site?
  • Will the bed fit through the stairwell and doors?
  • Is the old mattress taken away?
  • What does the guarantee cover, and for how long?

Also ask whether the headboard and base travel in sections, who assembles them and what happens to the packaging and old bed.

Use the same short notes for every bed you try: sleeping position, tension, pressure at shoulder and hip, movement transfer and sitting height. Without notes, three similar beds quickly merge in the memory. A consistent checklist helps you compare constructions rather than mood or covering colour.

Before buying, ask for the care instructions for the exact model. Whether mattress and topper should be turned or rotated, how the cover is cleaned and which base is permitted depends on the construction. Written model-specific guidance is more useful than one general rule that does not fit every bed.

Check which parts actually belong to the display bed you selected. Pillows, duvet, bedspread and decoration may change the overall impression without forming part of the order. Have the ordered specification listed separately and, if useful, photograph the fabric sample, feet and headboard.

With a split mattress, test the connection between the two sides. Ask whether the design uses one continuous topper, how the sides are secured and whether each can be turned or replaced independently. These details affect daily use more than the term box spring bed.

One last point sounds simple but can become costly: do not buy a bed from a picture. Covering colours look different on a screen, and firmness cannot be depicted. Compare a small number of clearly different tensions, note your impressions and sleep on the decision. If you want to understand the difference between a handmade bed and a standard box spring, we have compared the two elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between box, mattress and topper?

The base is the sprung foundation. The mattress provides much of the support and feel. The topper affects the immediate surface and may protect the mattress. All three layers should be assessed as one complete system.

Which bed sizes are usual in Switzerland?

Swiss retailers offer sizes including 80, 90, 140, 160 and 180 by 200 centimetres. Other dimensions and split configurations depend on the manufacturer. Measure the room, access route and existing bedding before ordering.

How high should a box spring bed be?

There is no single height that suits everyone. Sit on the edge and check getting in and standing up. Then have the finished height of the selected base, mattress, topper and feet confirmed in writing.

What should I ask before ordering?

Lead time, assembly on site, whether the bed fits through stairwell and doors, whether the old mattress is taken away, and what exactly the guarantee covers. These questions cover central practical points before ordering.
