Choosing mattress firmness: not harder, but better matched

Anyone searching for mattress firmness usually wants a simple answer: soft, medium or firm. The problem is that these labels are not standardised between manufacturers. A firm mattress from one brand may feel softer than a medium model from another. Firmness is therefore not a universal measurement, but a position within one particular range.
What firmness actually describes
Firmness describes how readily a mattress yields under load. It does not by itself describe support. Spring construction, the number and arrangement of pocket springs, upholstery, zoning and the base all matter. A point-elastic mattress can feel soft while holding the spine precisely. A hard mattress that yields as one surface can create pressure at shoulder and hip without properly supporting the lower back.
Body weight is only the starting point
Weight charts can give an initial direction, but they cannot replace trying a mattress. Two people of the same weight may need completely different support because of height, shoulder width and weight distribution. The real question is whether shoulder and pelvis can settle while waist and lumbar area remain supported. In side sleeping the spine should stay reasonably straight; on the back it should keep its natural shape.
Sleeping position changes the answer
Side sleepers usually need more give at shoulder and hip. Back sleepers benefit from even support that prevents the pelvis sinking too far. Front sleepers often need a more stable centre to avoid an exaggerated hollow in the lower back. People who change position frequently need a responsive mattress that works in more than one posture.
Why ten minutes beats ten reviews
Online reviews tell you how a mattress works for someone else's body. In a showroom you can compare directly: start in your normal position, then pay attention to shoulder, hip and lower back. Turn several times and spend at least ten minutes on each of two or three suitable models. The right firmness rarely feels dramatic; it removes pressure without making the body search for support.
A double bed can have two settings
Partners do not have to compromise. High-quality box spring and pocket-spring systems can be tuned differently on each side while height, fabric and overall appearance remain consistent. This is especially useful when body weight, preferred position or temperature sensitivity differ markedly.
At passion for beds you can compare different Vispring and Mattsons settings in our showroom at Talstrasse 66 in Zurich. We begin with build and sleeping habits, not a label. Persistent pain or medical symptoms should also be discussed with a doctor or qualified therapist.
