Why a Vispring bed lasts a lifetime
By passion for beds editorial team

The question almost always comes at the same moment: when the price is on the table. Why does this bed cost so much more, and what justifies that over the years? The answer is not one single feature, but that no step is shortened anywhere.
Vispring has been building in Plymouth, England since 1901 and had a significant hand in developing the pocket spring into its present form. Every spring sits in its own calico pocket. The pockets are tied to one another by hand rather than machine-welded, so each spring can move independently.
That sounds like a detail and is the heart of the matter. A welded row of springs works as a unit: press in one place and the whole area gives way. Hand-nested springs give way exactly where the weight is. Shoulder and hip sink in while the lower back stays supported.
Above the springs sit natural materials rather than foam: horsehair, new wool, cashmere, cotton. Horsehair is springy and hollow, carries moisture away and keeps standing back up. New wool regulates temperature in both directions, in winter as in summer. None of these materials glue together.
The layers are tufted by hand: tapes are drawn through the whole mattress and knotted at the surface so the filling stays where it belongs. A glued construction cannot be opened or renewed. A tufted one can, and that is why such beds can reach decades at all.
On top of that, tension is not a label but a setting. It is chosen from body weight and sleeping position, and on a double bed each side can differ. Two people thirty kilos apart do not need a compromise mattress, they need two properly set halves.
What that means in practice: a bed that has not sagged after five years, that does not turn clammy in summer, and whose support does not quietly disappear without you noticing when it started. You are not buying one night, you are buying a few thousand.
Whether that is worth it for you depends on how long you intend to sleep on it. That is why we ask about that first in the showroom and only then show you beds. And it is why we ask you to lie down for ten minutes before deciding anything.
