The best mattress exists, but it is not the same for everyone

The best mattress is not the winner of a generic test. It is the mattress that keeps your body stable and free of pressure in your preferred sleeping position. Awards and reviews can indicate material quality and durability, but only your body can show whether shoulder, waist and pelvis are properly supported.
Four criteria matter more than the brand name
First, the springs must respond locally. Second, the setting must suit build and sleeping position. Third, wool, cotton, horsehair, cashmere or foam influence climate and pressure distribution. Fourth, the base must be compatible, because even a good mattress cannot work as designed on an unsuitable foundation.
Pocket springs, foam or natural materials?
Pocket springs provide moving, local support and good airflow. Foam can distribute pressure evenly but behaves differently depending on quality and room temperature. Natural materials are used as comfort layers above the springs rather than replacing them. They absorb and release moisture and alter the feel without enclosing the body completely.
The right firmness appears through comparison
Firmness labels are not standardised, so do not choose from a weight chart alone. Compare at least three settings and spend longer on the best two. The shoulder should yield in side sleeping, the pelvis should not collapse and the lower back should feel supported. Turning should remain easy.
Consider price together with lifespan
A cheap mattress that loses support early can cost more per year of use than a high-quality model. Spring quality, material quantity, construction, turnability and long-term care all matter. Ask what sits behind the price rather than focusing only on discounts.
