How often should you replace a mattress? The honest answer

The often quoted rule of eight to ten years is a guide, not an expiry date. Construction, material quality, body weight, moisture, care and use alter lifespan considerably. A well-made, well-maintained mattress may remain stable much longer; a simple model may lose support earlier.
Seven signs that replacement is due
Permanent hollows, a noticeably softer favourite side, morning discomfort that eases away from bed, increasing pressure points, damaged covers, persistent odour or a generally less settled feel matter more than the calendar. A major change in body weight, health or sleeping position can also mean the previous setting no longer suits you.
Topper or new mattress?
A topper changes the surface feel and can make a sound mattress more comfortable. It cannot replace lost support. If the mattress sags or its spring unit yields unevenly, a new topper merely hides the problem for a short time. Check the foundation before changing the comfort layer.
Extending mattress life
Air the bed and bedroom regularly, use a washable protector and rotate or turn the mattress only as the maker recommends. Maintain a suitable base and avoid persistent high humidity. Treat stains early and appropriately. With hand-tufted natural mattresses, gentle patting helps keep fillings even.
Compare before discarding
If you are unsure, compare a current, properly tuned mattress with your memory of the existing one. Differences in pressure relief and support usually become clear quickly. Good advice should also explain whether only the topper, the mattress or the complete sleep system needs renewal.
At passion for beds in Zurich you can compare new mattresses and complete Vispring and Mattsons systems. We consider not only age, but how you lie today and which existing components can sensibly remain in use.
